Welcome to the Evening Standard’s Premier League match coverage of Chelsea vs Aston Villa LIVE.
Tonight’s game will see John Terry return to Stamford Bridge for the first time since his emotional farewell in 2017.
The former Blues stalwart is now the assistant manager of an Aston Villa team that sit three points clear of the relegation zone after a 2-2 draw against Manchester United last time out.
Frank Lampard’s Chelsea, meanwhile, will be hoping to bounce back after successive top-flight defeats to Manchester City and West Ham. A top-four finish is still very much on course, but the Blues will want to ensure this slump does not become the norm.
With kick-off scheduled for 7:30pm GMT, follow all the goals and action with expert coverage from James Olley at Stamford Bridge.
Some concerns for the Blues though, with Willian and Abraham both hobbling off tonight.
Lampard’s men back to winning ways after Mount and Abraham’s goals either side of Trezeguet’s goal.
“Abraham was asked by one of Chelsea’s backroom staff to go straight down the tunnel but he insisted on watching the rest of the game from the dugout, which suggests the striker feels the injury that forced him off isn’t too serious.”
90 mins: Four minutes of added time. Chelsea look a bit nervy having failed to find the third goal.
89 mins: Luiz…. fine save from Kepa!
That was nearly the moment for Villa. Elmohamady’s cross came into the box and the Brazilian rises above Zouma to head low towards the corner, but Kepa gets down well.
85 mins: Two chances go begging for Villa!
Douglas Luiz sees his effort blocked brilliantly by Zouma and it’s out for a corner. From there, it bounces to Elmohamady and he strikes over.
Big chances wasted.
84 mins: A nervy moment at the back for Chelsea as the visitors chase an unlikely point. Wesley tries to bring it under control and James bravely heads clear.
Michy Batshuayi is getting ready to come on here. A standing ovation for the striker, who appeared to jar his knee.
80 mins: WHAT A SAVE HEATON!
Oh my goodness! Heroic save from the Villa goalkeeper!
Abraham wins a free-kick 25 yards from goal and it’s struck well by Willian, who curls it towards the top corner, but Heaton tips it onto the post.
77 mins: Pulisic denied by Heaton!
The football is absolutely delightful and Pulisic will be wondering how he hasn’t scored.
He cuts inside with a lovely turn and his effort is stopped by Heaton at the near post before Abraham is stopped from hammering home the rebound.
72 mins: Chelsea are back on top again and it’s Kante’s volley from a corner which is nearly turned in by Abraham.
Looks like there’s another goal in this one yet.
69 mins: Aston Villa appear to have weathered the storm somewhat and they’re beginning to pose a few problems for Chelsea at the back.
With only a one-goal lead, the Blues need to be careful, considering Villa held Manchester United to a draw at the weekend.
67 mins: Azpilicueta wide!
Well, the full-back isn’t known for his goals but after trying to set up Abraham for a second, he goes for goal himself on the rebound.
But his curling effort flashes past the far post. Chelsea may rue missing all of these chances.
60 mins: More chances for Chelsea!
Pulisic again is alive to take the loose ball into the box and it’s a vital block from Konsa.
Seconds later, Willian powers a drive at goal and Heaton tips it wide. From the rebound, James crosses to Mount and it’s a fine challenge from Luiz to prevent it becoming 3-1.
It’s all Chelsea at the moment. They need a third to reflect their dominance now.
“Chelsea look rampant now in their search for a third goal which would surely kill this off. Villa have posed no sort of threat at all since the restart and are clinging on at the moment.”
