Even ancient societies didn’t want to pay for Apple Care!
Archaeologists have pulled what looks like a jewel-studded iPhone case from the depths of the ocean in southern Siberia – a site known by some as Russia’s “Atlantis.”
It’s an early belt buckle made of prehistoric gemstones – and it dates to the Xiongnu period which was more than 2,000 years ago, according to a study in the journal Asian Archaeology.
The belt buckle is around 7 inches long and 4 inches wide, and is made from jet – a gemstone made from pressurized wood – inlaid with coins of mother-of-pearl, carnelian and turquoise, according to the Siberian Times. The belt was decorated with Chinese wuzhu coins.
Researchers from the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) dug up the artifact from a woman’s grave, along with her skeleton. They jokingly named her “Natasha,” and named the artifact “Natasha’s iPhone.”
The item was actually dug up in 2016, but recently gained attention after one of the archeologists shared pictures on Instagram.
The grave was buried deep in the Siberian territory of Tuva, near Mongolia. The site is only accessible to archaeologists for a few weeks out of the year, as it is located in a flood zone where the waters recede between late May and early June.
Archeologists believe it may be up to 2,137 years old, as that is when the wuzhu coins were first minted.
