MANILA, Philippines — Supper Typhoon Uwan has weakened into a typhoon and is now over the coastal waters of La Union but storm signals remained up over several areas particularly in Luzon, the national weather bureau said on Monday.
Weather specialist Robert Badrina of the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said in a 5:30 a.m. briefing that Signal No. 4 is still up over the western portion of Nueva Vizcaya, the western portion of Mountain Province, the southern portion of Abra, the western portion of Ifugao, Benguet, the central and southern portions of Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, the northern portion of Nueva Ecija, the northern portion of Tarlac, and the northern portion of Zambales.
Signal No. 3, on one hand, has been hoisted over the southwestern portion of mainland Cagayan, the western portion of Isabela, the southern portion of Apayao, the rest of Kalinga, the rest of Ifugao, the rest of Abra, the rest of Mountain Province, Quirino, the southern portion of Ilocos Norte, the rest of Ilocos Sur, the rest of Nueva Vizcaya, the rest of Nueva Ecija, the northern and central portions of Aurora, the western portion of Bulacan, Pampanga, the rest of Tarlac, the rest of Zambales, and the northern portion of Bataan.
Pagasa’s latest bulletin showed that Metro Manila is under Signal No. 2 along with the rest of mainland Cagayan including Babuyan Islands, the rest of Isabela, the rest of Apayao, the rest of Ilocos Norte, the rest of Aurora, the rest of Bulacan, the rest of Bataan, Quezon including Polillo Islands, Rizal, Laguna, Cavite, Batangas, Marinduque, the northern portion of Oriental Mindoro, the northern and central portions of Occidental Mindoro including Lubang Islands, Camarines Norte, and the northwestern portion of Camarines Sur.
Meanwhile, Signal No. 1 is still raised over Batanes, the northern portion of Palawan including Calamian Islands, Cuyo Islands, and Cagayancillo Islands, the rest of Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, Masbate including Ticao and Burias Islands, Romblon, the rest of Oriental Mindoro, and the rest of Occidental Mindoro.
In the Visayas, same storm signal was up the western and central portions of Northern Samar, the northwestern portion of Samar, Iloilo, Capiz, Aklan, and Antique, including Caluya Islands.
Moving west-northwestward at 25 kilometers per hour (kph), the typhoon was estimated to be over the coastal waters of Bacnotan, La Union while packing maximum sustained winds of 150kph near the center and gustiness of up to 230kph, Pagasa said.
Uwan will continue moving northwestward to northward over the West Philippine Sea and may even re-intensify between Tuesday and Wednesday, Pagasa forecaster Badrina said.
“It would likely leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) early Tuesday morning and may re-enter by Thursday and it will quickly exit,” Badrina said.
