The No 1 typhoon signal will remain in force in Hong Kong at least until noon on Sunday, while the weather forecaster will assess the need to upgrade it to No 3 in the afternoon.
The Hong Kong Observatory said the tropical depression would remain at least 600 kilometres (373 miles) from the city on Sunday morning.
“Under the combined effect of the tropical depression and the ridge of high pressure over southeastern China, local winds are occasionally strong offshore and on high ground,” it said.
“With the tropical depression moving towards the vicinity of Hainan Island, local winds are expected to strengthen later on Sunday.”
The Observatory said it would assess the need to issue the No 3 strong wind signal between noon and 6pm on Sunday, depending on the distance of the tropical depression from Hong Kong, and the change in local winds.
