The ‘Stitches’ singer seemingly shared the timeline of how he reconnected with ex Camila Cabello—who he split with in 2021 following two years of dating—amid his rumored romance with the “Espresso” singer, who he was first spotted with in February 2023, according to EOnline.

Shawn Mendes opens up about past love triangle
In a preview for Thursday’s episode of John Mayer’s SiriusXM show, “How’s Life,” the “Señorita” singer says that while he was dating “someone,” he reunited with an ex-girlfriend due to some “unresolved feelings.”
“I’m with someone. Two days before going to hang with my ex, [I] express I’m going to hang with my ex because I have unresolved feelings,” Mendes told Mayer. “Maybe instead of two days it could have been two weeks,” he was quoted as saying by People.
In hindsight, Mendes said that “maybe instead of two days” he should have told her “two weeks” ahead of time.
Mayer then asks Mendes, “Is there something in all of this that you could say, ‘Yeah, I played that wrong?’”
“The biggest lesson I’ve heard is no one gets out of this life without getting hurt, and no one gets out of this life without hurting someone,” he revealed, reflecting on his past love triangle.

Reportedly, Shawn and Camila began their relationship in 2019 but decided to call it quits in 2021. In February 2023, Shawn was spotted hanging out with Sabrina, fueling speculations about their romance. Two months later, he was kissing Camila, seemingly rekindling their romance for a brief period. Ultimately, they decided to part ways again.
Though none of the parties involved have directly commented on the situation, many fans think Carpenter let her music do the talking with her hit song “Taste.”
The lyrics of the revenge track read: “I heard you’re back together and if that’s true / You’ll just have to taste me when he’s kissin’ you / If you want forever, I bet you do / Just know you’ll taste me too.”
In September, fans speculated that Cabello, 27, was making a dig at Carpenter, 25, during her performance at the 2024 iHeartRadio Music Festival while singing her and ex Mendes’ song “Señorita.”
“You say we’re just friends/But friends don’t know the way you…” Cabello sang, purposefully stopping before singing the next word “taste,” and instead putting a finger to her lips with a knowing look before continuing the song.

What Cabello said about Mendes
While Mendes doesn’t name the women he’s speaking about in the clip, the “Stitches” hitmaker and Cabello, who first dated from 2019 to 2021, were rumored to have rekindled their relationship for a brief period in 2023 — after he reportedly struck up a romance with Carpenter.
“You’re just kind of like, it’s not a fit, it doesn’t feel right,” Cabello said on the Call Her Daddy podcast in March of their second split. “And I think, luckily, I was in a place in my life where it took me less time to realize that. It took us both less time to be like, ‘This doesn’t feel right and we don’t need to try so hard to make it work. It’s all good.’”

She continued, “I will always care about him and love him. He’s such a good person, and I’m lucky because some people have exes that are awful, and he is not. He’s a really kind, good person.”
Echoing the sentiment, Mendes praised Cabello during a September appearance on Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast.
“She’s an amazing human being and she’s incredibly understanding and thoughtful and caring,” he said of the Fifth Harmony alum at the time. “So communicating with her is not difficult and that’s probably a huge part of it.”
Carpenter went on to date “Saltburn” star Barry Keoghan, but they split earlier this month.
Meanwhile, the “Senõrita” duo sparked reconciliation rumors, once again, after attending the Copa América Final together in July.
