ECONOMYNEXT – Vietnam’s Ambassador to Sri Lanka Trinh Thi Tam had visited Sri Lanka’s Hayleys group in a bid to boost economic co-operation between the two countries.
During a meeting with Hayleys officials led by Chairman Mohan Pandithage, had provided an in-depth briefing on the group including its existing ties with the Vietnam.
Ambassador Trinh Thi Tam had briefed Hayleys on Viet Nam’s interest in expanding economic cooperation with South Asian countries, including Sri Lanka.
“Ambassador Trinh Thi Tam provided an overview of Viet Nam’s recent economic performance, with significant achievements in trade expansion as well as foreign investment and tourist attraction,” an embassy statement said.
“Ambassador welcomed more Sri Lankan businessmen to invest in Viet Nam, adding more value to their 30 existing projects. Ambassador also informed of products of Viet Nam’s strength for export, especially agricultural products, tropical fruits, agricultural machines.”
Hayleys had a number of Viet Nam partners, in areas of trade, tourism, agriculture, engineering, transport and logistics.
“The dialogue also emphasized the importance of fostering a positive business environment, with a focus on innovation and sustainable practices,” the statement said.
“Both sides recognized the potential for joint ventures, particularly in agriculture, plantation, transportation, logistics, and power sectors, which could yield significant economic benefits for both nations.”
The Hayleys team interested in tapping into Viet Nam’s growing market.
The discussions had found that there was potential in retail of products such as tea, coconut, coffee and sectors such as hi-tech and green agriculture, construction and engineering especially in manufacturing electric vehicles.
Annual bilateral trade between the two countries was around 300 million US dollars. (Colombo/Jan11/2025)
