Hudson Canyon may not be a household name, but for the ocean life that calls it home, this underwater canyon is a haven.
Scientists were astounded this spring when a survey found 45 North Atlantic Right whales hanging out in Hudson Canyon — that’s more than 10% of the species’ worldwide population.
Whales, sea turtles and fish flock to the canyon because the area’s rich waters provide an abundant food supply.
What is Hudson Canyon?
Hudson Canyon, located 100 miles southeast of New York City, is up to 2.5 miles deep and 7 miles wide. That makes it the largest underwater canyon on the East Coast. Centuries-old deep sea coral cling to its canyon walls, providing shelter for fish and other bottom-dwelling sea life.
It’s truly a national wonder.
Like the Grand Canyon on land, this dramatic seascape deserves permanent protection.
Right now, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is considering a proposal that would deliver permanent protections for the ecosystem in and around Hudson Canyon. It could safeguard the area’s marine life from offshore drilling and increase research about the area’s unique ecosystem.
Hudson Canyon’s whales, sea turtles and coral can’t ask for their own protections — they need us to act on their behalf. That’s why we support the creation of a national marine sanctuary in Hudson Canyon.Â
What would designation as a national marine sanctuary do for Hudson Canyon?Â
If the marine sanctuary proposal became a reality, it would make a huge difference for our ability to protect and learn about Hudson Canyon. Marine sanctuaries receive additional protections from mining, pollution and other destructive practices, but they do so much more.Â
Marine sanctuary designation also allows a better understanding and appreciation of an area’s natural wonders and cultural importance. This includes more public education efforts to raise awareness of the history of the area including the indigenous groups with a long connection to Hudson Canyon. This designation will also enable more scientific research in the area, including vital Right whale population studies.Â
Creation of the Hudson Canyon National Marine Sanctuary will ensure Hudson Canyon remains a haven for ocean life, forever.
