Ukraine has successfully intercepted a Russian glide bomb in the southern region of Zaporizhzhya, Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Yuriy Ihnat confirmed to the Interfax-Ukraine news agency on Friday.
Ihnat did not provide any further details about the weapon used against the glide bomb. Military bloggers had previously speculated that it was an experimental weapon.
Ihnat said a “complex approach” of ground-based air defences and airborne assets is needed to keep Russian fighter jets armed with glide bombs away.
The Ukrainian Air Force has already successfully intercepted dangerous glide bombs on several occasions, he added.
Russia’s air force relies heavily on glide bombs, which are dropped from a great height, out of reach of Ukrainian air defences. Equipped with wings, they glide to the area of their targets.
The city of Zaporizhzhya, just over 30 kilometres from the front line, has repeatedly been attacked by glide bombs.
