Going back to the basics is a good policy when driving in the rain. Increasing following distances, turning headlights on, and keeping your speed in check are all tenets of proper wet-weather driving.
Based on the footage seen here, however, it appears that the driver of one C8 Corvette in Israel may not have remembered to follow these rules.
The crash was captured by a dash camera of a nearby driver on an Israel highway, with the video clip posted to the C8 Corvette Owners (And Friends) Facebook page on February 5th. In the clip, rain can be seen pouring down onto the highway, and the spray from a commercial truck is decreasing visibility even more — when the V-8 sports car come flying by in the left lane.
The driver with the dash camera attempts to pass the truck, thus finding themself in the right place to capturing the crash of the Corvette. A tall splash of water rises toward the jersey barrier divider as the C8 disappears into the mist — and suddenly, the American sports car is seen spinning across the highway, narrowly missing a guardrail on the right-hand side and flying off the road. The filming driver immediately pulls over to render aid to the battered ‘Vette and its driver, at which time we get our first glimpse of the damage at hand.
A subsequent video of the Corvette (seen below) shows it in post-crash status on the roadside. Shockingly, the bodywork seems largely undamaged beyond a missing passenger-side mirror. The left rear wheel is missing and the two front wheels are obviously snapped away from the steering knuckle, however, and the chassis appears to be resting on a rock, suggesting the majority of the damage may be out of sight. That said, the airbags inside the Corvette seemingly didn’t deploy, suggesting the impact may not have been as bad as it could have been.
It’s not immediately clear how many people were in the Corvette or if there were any injuries, but we’d wager to say this example is in for an expensive journey back to the road. If we’ve learned anything from this, it’s to pull your speed back when it’s pouring… especially with 495 hp under your right foot.
