ECONOMYNEXT – Foreign Ministers of Sri Lanka and the Maldives said they are committed to strengthen the bilateral ties between the two neighbour island nations with mutual benefits to both countries.
Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath met his Maldivian counterpart Abdulla Khaleel in Colombo on Wednesday (19) for high-level discussions aimed at deepening cooperation across multiple sectors.
Speaking to the media, Minister Herath highlighted Sri Lanka’s commitment to strengthening its bilateral ties with the Maldives, particularly in economic recovery, investment partnerships, and employment opportunities.
“Sri Lanka and Maldives enjoy centuries-old relations in diverse areas based on strong socio-cultural affinities. Our discussions today reaffirm our shared commitment to take our partnership to new heights,” he stated.
One of the key points of discussion was economic collaboration, with Sri Lanka encouraging Maldivian investments in various sectors as the country is recovering from its unprecedented economic crisis.
Minister Herath also emphasized the valuable contributions of Sri Lankan professionals in Maldives, particularly in education, banking, and healthcare.
The two ministers further explored deepening cooperation in aviation, tourism, and fisheries, with Sri Lanka advocating for easier transit passage for its fishing vessels.
Minister Khaleel commended Sri Lanka’s resilience in overcoming economic challenges.
“Sri Lanka has always been and continues to be one of our closest friends and development partners. As we celebrate 60 years of diplomatic relations, we remain fully committed to strengthening this historical partnership,” he remarked.
He acknowledged Sri Lanka’s contributions to the Maldives’ socio-economic growth and expressed gratitude for the hospitality extended to the Maldivian community residing in Sri Lanka.
Key agreements were made to enhance cooperation in trade, investment, education, and maritime security, he said.
Minister Khaleel said the Maldives has offered to share expertise in sustainable fishing and value-added fisheries products, while both sides agreed to combat illegal, unregulated, and unreported (IUU) fishing in their Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs).
Environmental and climate change initiatives were also on the agenda, with the two island nations committing to joint efforts in climate adaptation and sustainability, he said.
The discussions also reinforced regional collaboration through the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA), with both countries pledging to work together for peace, security, and sustainable development in South Asia.
