Synopsis: Airflow out of the Gulf (south) increases on Sunday bringing warmer temperatures with the potential for cloud development and higher moisture levels (1.2″). 70-degree temperatures are probable for areas away from the water.
Late Sunday night, a trough will develop along the coast that could trigger Sunday night showers. A low-pressure system in the Desert Southwest on Sunday should reach Texas by Sunday night. The system will move southeast towards South Texas meeting up with the trough and delivering rain showers to South Texas Sunday night and Monday. Some stored energy from the sun could allow for a thunderstorm or two Sunday night with the best chances for Monday for locations closest to the coast (further east).
Late Monday could see areas of heavy rainfall in the Crossroads. Due to the dry nature of the area, flash flooding confined to some localized areas could be possible. We will issue the latest updates and continue to monitor this changing weather situation.
For the long-term period, Monday Night through Saturday, the low-pressure system will move out of the area and off to the east on Monday night. High-pressure ridging moves in Monday night as well. The high will bring drier air down and that will end rain on Monday night from west to east.
Dry air from the northwest, combined with sinking air from high-pressure will allow for temperatures to warm into the 80’s in some spots on Tuesday. as the sun shines under clear skies.
By Tuesday airflow will return out of the Gulf (south) bringing back moisture and clouds into the area.
A trough will move from west to east toward Texas on Wednesday, increasing moisture levels (1.5″) and moving into Gulf moisture that will create some upward movement (lift). This dynamic will allow for scattered to numerous showers and possible thunderstorms (closer to the coast) on Wednesday.
As the trough moves east away from the region, a cold front will get dragged into South Texas Wednesday night into Thursday morning. The cold front will bring down cool, dry air and this should end showers from west to east on Thursday. The rush of cold air will bring strong winds out of the north (Wind Advisory Conditions across the Islands Thursday and Thursday night).
This cold air could bring freezing temperatures for South Texas Thursday night and Friday morning (including the northern Islands). Combine the cold air with the strong winds out of the north and Wind Chill Temperatures will be in the teens and the 20’s. Freezing temperatures could be a problem for Friday night and Saturday night in some of the northern portions of the viewing area while the region sits under mostly cloudy skies.
The rain should end by Thursday afternoon before the freezing temperatures move into the are keeping everything falling as rain compared to snow, sleet or frozen rain. Light rain could fall along the coast on Friday morning. In this case, it is possible for sleet or freezing rain along the coast on Friday morning.
By Thursday afternoon, as the drier air moves into the area then there is the possibility for brief fire weather concerns. The fire weather and rain are days away so we will continue to bring the latest weather update.
