VICTORIA, Texas – Here’s a look at what to expect this week on Community Crossroads.
A lot of wonderful events happening in the Crossroads.
Claire Santellana of the Victoria Art League talks about their most recent art walk in downtown Victoria. More businesses participated and artists were able to sell their art pieces. Their recent Fall Art Show was a huge success, said Santellana. She also spilled the beans. A third art walk is scheduled. The scheduled day for the art walk is Dec. 18, 2021 in downtown Victoria.
The Gulf Bend Center in Victoria recently launched a campaign.
A big thing happened for the Gulf Bend Center. For the first time in their history, the center received a state and national accreditation standard for Community Behavioral Health. This means a whole bunch of things for the center. The Gulf Bend Center recently launched “Building A Healthy Community Together” capital campaign to support the renovation of their first floor clinic. Lane Johnson with the the Gulf Bend Center said one of the key points of the campaign is to make mental health care more accessible by offering transportation services and more in the Crossroads. The center is currently accepting donations to help with the initiative.
A familiar face of Victoria makes a nationwide impact.
Matthew Lemke of Victoria who is also a Walmart Associate is on a mission to raise awareness. He has been raising awareness for quite some time now. Lemke has Chiari Malformation, which is the lower end of the brain becoming misplaced and extending out from the skull. Lemke talks about his amazing support behind his book following his journey and campaign. Lemke will launch his second book on Jan. 5.
The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office on holiday scams and uptick in deer-related crashes.
Calhoun County Sheriff Bobbie Vickery talks about what people need to watch out for when it comes to holiday scams. Another peak season that people need to be aware of are deer-related or wildlife crashes. Especially, in rural areas. The Sheriff’s Office said the number of deer and hogs out increases by at least 50 percent during this time of the year. The deer are mostly in rural areas and accidents involving deer are higher from late Sept. to Feb.
The Crossroads Chapter of the Military Veteran Peer Network resources available for veterans.
Oscar Pulido with the Military Veteran Peer Network goes over the services the network has to offer for veterans. Some include; one-on-one peer led counseling, job placement, rental assistance, mentorship programs and more. There is a variety of resources available for veterans in the Crossroads. To learn more, you can also participate in VetFest. This event will be at Son Valley Ranch on Nov.11 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
