‘My daughter gave me that!’ Al Pacino reveals he’s NOT a Shrek fan after all… says he had no idea the green ogre was on his phone case that went viral

Despite outwards appearances, Al Pacino isn’t the biggest Shrek fan in the world.

On Wednesday, the 82-year-old actor talked about his phone case, covered in images of everyone’s favorite cartoon ogre, that went viral on social media.

‘My daughter gave me that,’ he said on the Today Show. ‘My youngest daughter put that on my phone.’

He explained he hadn’t looked at the back of the phone case when he put it on.

‘I didn’t even look at it until social media told me what was on my phone,’ he said. ‘And I took a look and said, “Oh, that’s Shrek.”‘

When asked why he still had the case, the Godfather star replied, rather indignantly, ‘Of course, it was a gift,’ he replied.

The trio talked about the production of the film, and Pacino revealed that De Niro asked him which character he would rather play.

Al ultimately played detective Lieutenant Hanna while De Niro took on the role of ruthless bank robber Neil McCauley.

The pair sat down in a diner to film an iconic sequence for the movie — one which De Niro insisted they not rehearse.

‘Bob said, “Let’s not rehearse. Let’s learn it somehow and, at the same time, when we show up, just walk through it a bit and then shoot it,”‘ Pacino explained. ‘It really worked.’

De Niro said he thought they were able to get the sequence done in just five or six, but Pacino insisted it was more than that.

When asked about a rumor that the pair did not shoot the sequence together, both stars just laughed at the notion.

Heat marked De Niro and Pacino’s first time onscreen together. Though they both appeared in the Godfather Part II, for which De Niro won his first Oscar, they never shared the screen.

Since the film’s release, the pair have starred in two other movies together: the 2008 film Righteous Kill and The Irishman, which came out in 2019.
