THE president of a sports club outside Oswestry has urged young people to not carry out anti-social behaviour at their grounds as they want to be a community area for all.
Officers from Oswestry Safer Neighbourhood team (SNT) were called to Whittington Cricket and Bowling Club on Thursday, January 27 after reports of youngsters using the bowling green as a football pitch and bike track.
Mike Brunt, president of Whittington Cricket and Bowling Club, admitted he and his fellow club members were disappointed to hear that the anti-social behaviour was taking place.
And he urged young people to view the area as a community space they can use as they grow older.
“There had been over the last few weeks a few individuals who were going down there,” he said.
“We have had to involved the police as there’s one or two incidents of anti-social behaviour on the bowling green – there have been young people playing on it.
“And some have been riding their bikes on the green too.
“The police have said they have spoken to three people and are speaking to them.
“We’re just thankful that it’s not rather worse damage damage.
“We’re a community cricket and bowls club, and we’re offering something for the community – an opportunity to people to come down and make use of our facility.
“Were open to welcoming youngsters to come and play cricket or bowls – we want to be offering ladies and youth cricket for young people.
“This is an opportunity to get involved so don’t ruin the club for anyone else please.
“We’re just glad that there was no further damage caused – they had been down and damaged some benches set out by the green.
“We’re just grateful that the police have managed to get the people involved for it and we thank them for their efforts.”
Officers from Oswestry SNT confirmed on social media that they had been called out to the club, near the B5009, and that three people were advised of their behaviour.
They said: “The bowling green attached to Whittington Cricket and Bowling Club has had some unwanted attention from youths lately during evenings and weekends – you have been asked politely to keep out.
They added: “Three local youths found on site advised accordingly.”
