Australian Open live blog: Ash Barty takes on Danielle Collins in women’s final, before all-Australian doubles final featuring Kyrgios and Kokkinakis
Danielle Collins will bring power and intensity
Australia knows a lot about Ash Barty but what about her opponent?
For non-tennis fans the American being in the final may be a bit of a surprise.
So here are some things you should know.
Collins will not hold back with her game or with her demeanour. The 28-year-old Floridian has a reputation for being intense and fearless on the court and plays strike first tennis.
While Barty will look to attack with her serve and use her heavy spin on both sides Collins will be in attack mode from the get go.
The American possesses some of the most powerful groundstrokes in the women’s game when she’s on and this past fortnight she has been at her best.
After she defeated 2020 French Open champion Swiatek, the Pole had this to say:
“I was prepared for her playing aggressive game, but I think that was the fastest ball I have ever played against on a match,” she said afterwards.
“For sure in practices I have hit maybe the same speed, but on matches it’s different because players don’t want to take that much risk. But it seemed for her that it wasn’t even risky because she was playing it with control.”
That is the type of power Barty is up against.
And while it has taken a while for Collins to reach this level on the WTA Tour she has a pedigree, in 2016 she was named the best female tennis player in the US college system.
