The Beacon fire, a slow-burning vegetation fire, scorched four acres in a hilly residential area of Laguna Niguel before firefighters stopped the forward progress of the blaze Wednesday evening, authorities said.
The fire, which was reported at 3:26 p.m. near the intersection of Alcott Place and Ridgeway Avenue, caused some minor damage to fences behind some homes, according to the Orange County Fire Authority. As of 5:30 p.m., no structures had been lost and no injuries reported.
The fire led to the evacuation of some residents and a request by public officials that people avoid the area.
The city posted an advisory for the immediate area around Alcott Place and Ridgeway Avenue, near Beacon Hill Park.
Laguna Niguel officials issued an evacuation order at 4:06 p.m. for Copps Hills Street, with a shelter-in-place order for Middleton Place and Alcott Place.
A temporary shelter was opened at Crown Valley Community Center, at 29751 Crown Valley Pkwy.
By 4:46 p.m., the OCFA said firefighters were making “good progress.”
