Bitcoin price alert: Markets are bracing for a critical week for Bitcoin as the Bank of Japan (BOJ) prepares for its December 18–19 policy meeting. Analysts and prediction markets point to an almost certain rate hike.

Polymarket shows a 98% probability of a BOJ rate increase, leaving just 2% betting on steady rates. The move could have far-reaching effects beyond Japan’s domestic bond market, potentially impacting global risk assets, including Bitcoin.

The expected rate hike would raise Japan’s policy rate to 75 basis points, the highest level in nearly 20 years. While modest compared to global rates, it carries significant implications.

Crypto analysts say Bitcoin is particularly exposed to a BOJ rate hike because of its strong link to global liquidity. In past episodes of Japanese policy tightening, Bitcoin has suffered sharp drawdowns ranging from roughly 20% to 30% within weeks.

With Bitcoin recently trading near the $85,000–$90,000 zone, a similar move could push prices toward the $65,000–$70,000 range, according to multiple market forecasts. Traders point to heavy leverage in crypto derivatives and reduced risk appetite as key downside risks.Bitcoin’s correlation with high-beta tech stocks has also increased. If broader markets sell off following the BOJ decision, crypto could face accelerated losses as investors cut exposure across risk assets.

Live Events

For decades, Japanese institutions have borrowed yen at ultra-low rates and invested in global equities, bonds, and cryptocurrencies through the yen carry trade. Rising yields now threaten this practice.

Analyst Mister Crypto explained, “For decades, the Yen has been the #1 currency people would borrow & convert into other currencies & assets… That carry trade is diminishing now, as Japanese bond yields are rising rapidly.”If yields keep climbing, leveraged positions funded in yen could be unwound. Investors may be forced to sell risk assets, including Bitcoin, to repay debts, raising liquidity concerns.

Bitcoin’s track record shows vulnerability

Bitcoin is currently trading at $88,956, down 1.16% in the past 24 hours. Traders are watching history closely. Previous BOJ hikes have triggered steep Bitcoin drops:

  • March 2024: BTC fell roughly 23%
  • July 2024: BTC dropped about 25%
  • January 2025:BTC slid more than 30%

Analyst 0xNobler warned, “Every time Japan hikes rates, Bitcoin dumps 20–25%. Next week, they will hike rates to 75 bps again. If the pattern holds, BTC will dump below $70,000 on December 19. Position accordingly.”

If history repeats, Bitcoin could see a 20% drop from current levels, testing support below $70,000.

Some analysts suggest the BOJ hike may not spell immediate Bitcoin losses. Macro strategist Quantum Ascend called it a regime shift rather than a liquidity shock.

According to this view, U.S. Federal Reserve rate cuts could inject dollar liquidity and weaken the USD. Meanwhile, gradual BOJ hikes strengthen the yen but may not destroy global liquidity. Capital rotation into risk assets, including Bitcoin, could create upside opportunities.

However, near-term conditions remain fragile. Bond market pressures may force the BOJ’s hand, triggering a potential unwind of leveraged trades. Rising yields and topping signals in global equities add to market stress.

Bitcoin faces low liquidity and year-end uncertainty

Bitcoin’s price action reflects ongoing uncertainty. December has been marked by choppy trading and low conviction ahead of year-end holidays.

Analyst Daan Crypto Trades highlighted that liquidity remains tight. With equities showing topping patterns, bond yields rising, and Bitcoin historically sensitive to Japan-driven liquidity, the BOJ decision could be one of the most consequential macro catalysts of 2025.

Whether it triggers another sharp drawdown or sets the stage for a post-volatility crypto rally will depend largely on global liquidity responses in the weeks after the hike.

Analysts warn that Bitcoin traders should prepare for high volatility. The BOJ rate hike may act as a trigger for a 20–30% correction, but some see potential for a rebound if liquidity conditions remain supportive.

Traders are watching closely. Historically, Japan-driven moves have proven to ripple across risk assets. Bitcoin investors may need to manage exposure and monitor the evolving macro landscape.

Global liquidity will be key in determining BTC’s next move. If leveraged yen positions are unwound quickly, selling pressure could intensify across crypto markets. Conversely, coordinated Fed easing or dollar weakness could cushion losses and spark renewed interest in risk assets.

Market analysts also highlight seasonal risks. Year-end holidays usually reduce trading volumes, which could amplify price swings. With Bitcoin hovering near $89,000, even modest shifts in capital flows could trigger sharp short-term volatility.
