WHEN IS BLACK FRIDAY 2021?
Mark your calendars – this year’s Black Friday will fall on Friday, 26 November.
WHAT IS BLACK FRIDAY?
Black Friday first began in the US on the Friday following thanksgiving, which is observed on the fourth Thursday of November.
Traditionally, this Friday marked the beginning of the holiday spending rush but in recent years it has snowballed into a global shopping phenomenon where retailers offer staggering discounts on a range of products across technology, beauty, fashion, homewares and more.
In Australia, Black Friday now competes with Boxing Day as our biggest shopping extravaganza.
TIPS AND TRICKS TO GET THE MOST OUT OF THE BLACK FRIDAY SALES
Whether you’re hankering for something specific or getting yourself ready to blitz through all your favourite sites, we reached out to Eliza Reid (@bargain_homewares), Dani Katralis (@LuxAndLemonade) and Jasmine Pisasale of (@bargainhunter_) for their pearls of wisdom. Here’s what they said.
1. PERFECT YOUR WISHLISTS
“Go in prepared,” says Dani – a self-confessed wishlist fan. “This also doubles as your decision making guide. When you look back at your wishlist during sale time you can see if you really want it.”
Eliza adds that the Black Friday sales are also a great time to get your Christmas gift shopping organised, saving you time and money come December.
“Simply buy online, have the items delivered to your door and you won’t even need to step foot inside a shopping centre this year,” she says.
2. NOTIFICATIONS ARE YOUR FRIEND
There can be a lot of benefit in following a site or brand’s social media account close to Black Friday. You’ll be notified as soon as the sale starts and you may even get early bird access. Signing up to a store’s newsletter is another good idea.
3. COMPARE, COMPARE, COMPARE
Whether it’s a TV, toaster or activewear don’t go straight to one retailer or the brand’s website as soon as the sales hit. Jasmine says you’ll be surprised at the price differences between sites.
“I want to get some PE Nation activewear so I’m keeping tabs on their various stockists like The Iconic and Stylerunner, and will compare notes once the sales hit.”
4. PREPARATION IS KEY
To breeze through the checkout process make sure you’re also logged in and have an account with the store. This is also a good time to double down on the retailer’s shipping costs and return policies too, says Eliza.
“You won’t have to bother with pesky details such as filling in your address and billing information on Black Friday – plus some stores may have a requirement that to get the discount you need to be a part of their membership or club,” she adds.
5. SPREADSHEETS ARE GREAT
For the true sale savants, a categorised spreadsheet will help keep tabs on your online wishlist across a variety of stores and categories.
“Use it to list the item, link to the site and the full price,” says Dani. “When it comes to sale time use your spreadsheet to track how good the deal is against the full price of the item.”
She also advises researching your size as well, so you don’t waste time with checking sizing guides later.
ARE BLACK FRIDAY DEALS REAL?
We know what you’re thinking … these deals sound too good to be true. But yes, the Black Friday deals are real – and they don’t happen too often, so you’re going to want to shop them while you still can.
AM I PROTECTED WHEN SHOPPING BLACK FRIDAY SALES?
As with all online purchases where you’re handing over your credit card details, it pays to do your due diligence to make sure you are not buying from a scam website. In 2019, 8,000 Australians reported online shopping scams “and $4 million reported loss” to the Australian Consumer and Competition Commission so it’s worth being extremely suspicious of dubious links to deals posted on social media, or random, unsolicited emails containing deals that are far too good to be true.
It also pays to keep your computer updated with the latest security software.
WHAT IS CYBER MONDAY?
Cyber Monday is Black Friday’s trusty counterpart. Held on the Monday following thanksgiving, Cyber Monday initially began in 2005 as the “online” version of Black Friday back when online shopping wasn’t quite as prolific as it is today.
Over the past few years, Cyber Monday has become the biggest event on the shopping calendar, raking in US $9.4 billion in 2019, according to Adobe Analytics.
WHEN IS CYBER MONDAY 2021?
Cyber Monday is the Monday straight after Black Friday. So, it will be held on Monday, 29 November.
