Shortstop Xander Bogaerts broke the game open with a two-run homer off Gerrit Cole in the top of the first. From there, Kyle Scwharber launched a solo shot off Cole, the Yankees’ ace. And Cole’s night ended two batters later, even if he was only at 50 pitches. He didn’t have his best stuff and the Red Sox pounced. Behind Eovaldi, their bullpen — a mix of Ryan Brasier, Tanner Houck, Hansel Robles and Garrett Whitlock — held the Yankees in check. Alex Verdugo, Boston’s 25-year-old left fielder, also added three RBI with a single an insurance double in the seventh.
