A British man teaching English in the US has shared some of the “annoying” questions he gets asked by the students.
Thomas, who lives in Tucson in the state of Arizona, documented his life as an English teacher in an American school on TikTok as he shared some of the most hilarious and, sometimes, annoying questions his students had asked.
Posting on his account @mrthomasenglish, he role-plays one of the scenarios.
He recalls the student asking him: “Sir, so you know you’re from England. Have you ever been to a place called ‘Gloo-gla-schlur-sheer’?”
Thomas raises his eyebrow and repeats: “‘Gloo-glas-ler-sheer’? Sure you don’t mean Gloucestershire?”
The student continues: “Yeah! My dad, who went by the way, said that it was called Glu-glas-ter-sheer.”
Obviously giving up to correct the pronunciation, Thomas asks: “Okay so what was your question?”
The curious learner says: “He said they had really good fish’n’chip there.”
Thomas is not convinced and replies: “Sure he didn’t just make that up just like he made up that place?”

In another clip, he showed the difference of the date format between the UK and the US and how it confused his students.
He also mentioned that sometimes he argued with his students for certain word meanings, such as the car indicator to signal a turn.
“It’s a blinker because it blinks” he quoted one student saying.
Another common example is the word “tick” as the US students argued it should be called a “check” because tick is the meaning of a bug.
Viewers who followed his social media account commented that Thomas must have had too much stress in class every day.
One said: “Damn you’ve got to have a lot of patience there.”
Another asked: “How do you deal with all the stress from class?”
A third added: “This drives me insane! It makes no sense the American way.”
