Deep-fried water is the latest trend to take off on TikTok. Yes, the seemingly impossible prospect of deep-frying water is a ‘thing’ in 2021. So, let’s take a look at whether it can actually be eaten and how the trend works.
Cooking challenges are some of the most popular on TikTok. From quick dinner hacks to how-to videos on cutting onions without crying – it’s all there! But, for now, deep-fried water is the trend of the moment.
Deep fried water on TikTok
It’s unclear whether the deep fried water trend took off on TikTok, or if it has its origins on YouTube.
A video from Eitan Bernath titled “Deep Frying Water (DON’T TRY THIS AT HOME!)” was posted on YouTube on January 31st 2021.
The Action Lab also posted a video “How To Make Fried Water” in December 2020.
The TikTok videos showing how to make deep fried water have been posted later in the year by users such as @trendychef_.

How does deep frying water work?
The video titles of ‘deep-frying water’ are potentially a little bit misleading as before the water is fried, it is solidified in some way.
Some videos showed water being mixed with agar agar powder before being refridgerated and deep-fried.
Others combine water with calcium alginate in order to create an “edible liquid membrane”.
Room temperature water is often boiled up with the addition of agar agar or calcium alginate. The water then solidifies into the fridge and then the jelly-like domes of water are breaded in flour, egg and breadcrumbs.
Then the breaded water is deep fried and drained.
Can you really eat deep fried water?
The breaded water balls come out of the deep fat fryer looking relatively appetising – think of an Italian arancini. However, as it turns out, they’re pretty much tasteless and have a non-flavoured jelly centre.
The deep-fried water seen in the YouTube and TikTok videos can technically be eaten, but it’s not advisable. Not only do they essentially taste of nothing, but they also have very little nutritional value.
Many of the video creators also warn against trying out the trend at home as it can be dangerous.
