China launches additional satellites for Spacesail Constellation

China successfully launched 18 new satellites on Thursday as part of the ongoing expansion of the Spacesail Constellation. The satellites were sent into orbit from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in Shanxi province, utilizing a modified Long March 6 carrier rocket.
The launch occurred at 1:15 pm Beijing Time, marking the sixth satellite deployment for the Spacesail Constellation. Each satellite reached its designated orbit, further advancing the commercial low-orbit satellite network. This mission represents the 557th flight of the Long March rocket family.
Developed by the Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology, the Long March 6 rocket employs liquid oxygen and kerosene as propellants, ensuring a non-toxic and environmentally friendly launch process. The rocket is capable of carrying payloads up to 6.5 tonnes to a 500-kilometer sun-synchronous orbit. The model is set for a demanding launch schedule in 2025, with more than ten missions planned.
The Spacesail Constellation is a significant project in China’s efforts to build a commercial satellite network, with its development commencing on August 6, 2024.
China also launched a new test satellite for communication technology from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in Sichuan province on Thursday. This satellite was deployed at 11:32 pm Beijing Time via a Long March-3B rocket, successfully reaching its planned orbit.
The communication technology satellite will be used for a range of applications, including satellite communications, radio and television broadcasting, and data transmission. It will also serve as a testing platform for validating related technologies. This marked the 558th mission of the Long March rocket series.
