A privately-run school in southern China has come under fire for ordering parents to sign up to rules approving the use of corporal punishment on students.
Longyuan Experimental School in Yangjiang, Guangdong province, was exposed in mid-February for asking the parents of its students to give consent for punishment measures including whipping hands and standing for extended periods.
According to the regulations, teachers can hit the palms of students no more than 10 times for each individual punishment while the standing penalty can last up to two hours, reported Jimu News.
“We aim to let students bear responsibility for the mistakes they have made. So they will have a higher awareness about preventing similar mistakes and they will become good, law-abiding citizens,” the rule reads.
The document also bans male students from having long hair and females from applying lipstick, having a manicure or wearing jewellery.
