ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka is on the watch for the spread of Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) from China, but no patients have been confirmed so far, Health Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said.
The epidemiology unit and ministry of health are on alert, he said.
“We are keeping watch on 20 locations”, minister Jayatissa told parliament.
There was a suspected patient but tests were negative, he said but Sri Lanka has identified a HMPV patient before the current outbreak, he said.
An outbreak of HMPV virus expanded in China in early December.
HMPV causes a respiratory illness with the symptoms of flu or Cold like symptoms, but it could develop to a condition similar to bronchitis or pneumonia. (Colombo/Jan09/2025)
