I’m sharing a few photos of a custom container crevice garden designed and created by the uber-talented Pan Yokome of Darts Hill Garden Park in Surrey, British Columbia. This was on silent auction at an awesome crevice-garden demo workshop.
The style of crevice gardens mimics the way many alpines grow in the wild, in little cracks and crevices of rocky mountain landscapes. They can be large, or small enough to fit in a container, like this one.
Plants liking more moisture go at the base, while those wanting the sharpest drainage do best planted higher up.
Crevice gardens can be great ways to grow difficult-to-cultivate plants. The rocky soil ensures good drainage, while the vertical rocks guide roots deep, where they avoid fluctuations in moisture and temperature.
This container crevice garden is a work of art! Whoever won it in the silent auction was a very lucky gardener.
