Many 2021 TikTok trend are seeing people using magnets in their videos. So, let’s take a look at what the TikTok trends are and why the viral magnet videos are so dangerous.
TikTok’s magnets trends span a wide range of things from ASMR videos to the ‘Covid-19 vaccine magnetic challenge’ but there are some TikTok challenges containing magnets that have seen people end up in hospital in 2021.
What is the TikTok magnets trend?
The TikTok magnets trend sees people place small metal magnetic balls on their tongue to create the look of a tongue piercing. Some also place the magnets on their nose to create the look of a nose piercing.
The magnetic balls are called Magneto Balls and, by the looks of TikTok, have a variety of uses.
However, TikTok users’ latest choice of placing the magnets inside their bodies has resulted in some serious hospital cases.
TikTok: The 2021 magnet craze gets out of hand
Following an 11-year-old and a 13-year-old in the UK having to undergo major surgery as a result of the craze, the NHS has said it wants the magnetic balls banned as per Sky News.
According to the Sky News report, “At least 65 children have been admitted to hospital in England for urgent surgery after swallowing magnets in the last three years“.
As per the report, not only are the magnetic balls a choking hazard but if they’re are swallowed, they “…can become forced together in the intestines or bowels, squeezing the tissue and cutting off the blood supply.”
The NHS looks to have been warning people about the magnetic balls for some time. A Tweet from NHS Wakefield dates back to 2020.
What is the TikTok magnet challenge?
The TikTok magnet challenge is slightly different from the magnet piercing trend.
Following the roll-out of the Covid-19 vaccines, many TikTok users have jumped on the TikTok magnet challenge which sees people place a magnet on the same spot that they were vaccinated to see whether it sticks or not.
The BBC debunked the theory on May 22nd in a video post.
