Veganuary may have finished now, however there will be some people out there who loved going plant-based so much they make be sticking to it.
Everyone seems to love a steak, but what do you do if you can’t have meat?
One popular Instagram food account has suggested the perfect meal replacement – crispy cauliflower steaks.
And what’s better is that the recipe has been revealed too.
The healthymealstoday account told it’s 1.1million followers how to cook the steaks, suggesting they be paired with avocado pea pesto pasta.
The account shared a photo of the tempting dish, alongside the instructions to make it.
The post was captioned: “EAT OR PASS?! Crispy Cauliflower Steaks with Avocado Pea Pesto Pasta.”
Many seemed to be loving the plant-based dish, with the post racking up more than 14,000 likes.
One excited fan exclaimed: “I WILL EAT ALL OF THIS.”
As another added: “That looks really good. I’ve been making them but more like a pepper steak, I love this idea!”
A third chimed in: “Eat eat eat.”
- Remove outer leaves from 1 large cauliflower and trim stem, leaving cauliflower intact.
- Slice cauliflower head through the middle.
- Slice 3/4 -inch steaks through one half. Repeat for other side – you should get 3 to 4 steaks.
- Rub both sides and tops of steaks with generous sprinkle of salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and smoked paprika and set aside
- In a medium bowl: mix 3/4 cups flour, 1 tbsp cornstarch, 1 tsp smoked paprika, 1/2 tsp garlic powder, 1/2 tsp onion powder, 1/2 teaspoon fine grind black pepper, 3/4 tsp salt (or to taste
- Transfer to a small rimmed baking sheet or dish an add 3/4 cup non-dairy milk to small rimmed dish. Dip both sides cauliflower steaks into milk. Use spoon to get into cracks and tops
- Dip into flour mixture until fully coated on both sides, using a spoon to place flour into cracks. Shake to remove excess. Pan-sear the cauliflower steaks before roasting
- Heat oil (about 1/4-inch high) in non-stick skillet and cook 3 minutes each side
- Use tongs to sear tops. (You do not need to brown)
- Place pan-seared steaks onto a large non-stick baking sheet (no parchment paper)
- Transfer the steaks to the oven and bake for 10 minutes
- Remove from oven and flip
- Brush both sides of steaks with some of the remaining milk as needed, until no white floured parts remain.
- Roast for about 10 to 15 minutes more, until cauliflower is fork tender. (Brush with more milk as needed.)
- Broil the cauliflower for 2 to 3 minutes (if desired) until very browned and crispy. (Use leftover flour mixture and milk for 1/2 -inch thick sliced carrots, lengthwise.)
However, it seemed others weren’t show sure about the meat alternative.
One said the cauliflower steak looked like “the inside of a brain cut in half”.
While a second simply wrote: “Pass.”
It reported that approximately half a million people signed up to Veganuary this year.
Some of these may have been convinced to turn plant-free by a partner though, as a study found millions of meat eaters have felt pressured to ditch animal products – especially by their own friends or partners.
