The 20th-anniversary reunion special released on HBO Max received a massive response from the Harry Potter fandom. It saw a majority of the film franchise’s cast members coming together to honour the iconic story.

After fans questioned why actor David Thewlis wasn’t in the Harry Potter reunion cast, the star released an interesting response.

David Thewlis addresses absence in Harry Potter reunion

After fans swarmed his inbox with questions about his absence in Harry Potter: Return To Hogwarts, David took to his Instagram and addressed the situation.

Accompanying his hilarious statement was a picture that sees him looking distraught as he covers his eyes with his hands.

In the caption, the actor, 58, talked about his absence writing, “Many of you have been asking why I was not present at the recent HP cast reunion.”

He continued narrating his tale of woe, “Well, last year, as some of you may recall, I foolishly posted what I thought was an amusing picture of a Lupin action figure to which I had attached some comically large feet. It seems I did this on a sensitive anniversary, upsetting many.”

David further wrote, “This led to an enormous number of fans (and some cast members) taking to the streets in protest and signing a petition demanding that I be banned from any future Potter celebrations.

“In my defence it was my wife’s idea. I did not realise the significance of the date and following the advice of my legal team the post has since been removed. I hope that has cleared things up.”

From the looks of it, David was only joking as no such picture can be found on the internet. The star is loved for his quirky, unusual and unfathomable sense of humour among his fans.

While David merely joked about his absence from the Harry Potter reunion cast, fans were quick to start speculating. His comments section was swarmed with more jokes from his followers.

The actor, however, did not delve into the actual reason behind his absence in the post.

Fans took the discussion about David’s absence over to Reddit.

While most fans understood that the actor’s Instagram post was all good humour, others began theorising and reading too much into it.

One Reddit user speculated that David’s post could be referencing hobbits.

A second fan jokingly speculated “he was accused of hobbit-face and the angry calls started coming in.”

Some fans on Instagram absolutely loved his post as well.
