Deivi Garcia took a potential step toward getting to The Bronx by pitching three scoreless innings in Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre’s 14-13 win over Syracuse on Tuesday afternoon in a one-game playoff to determine the International League North Division winner.
The 20-year-old right-hander allowed just one hit, no walks and struck out two out of the bullpen in his best performance since throwing five shutout innings for SWB on Aug. 17. Since then, Garcia had given up six runs in 4²/₃ innings over three appearances.
Garcia could get called up at some point this month, according to general manager Brian Cashman, and he would be added to the bullpen.
Brett Gardner hit his 20th homer in the Yankees’ 10-1 win over the Rangers on Tuesday night at the Stadium, the second time in his career he has reached that milestone.
Cameron Maybin, who has a sore left wrist, hasn’t been in the starting lineup since last Wednesday. Boone said he had considered inserting the veteran outfielder into Monday’s game as a pinch runner and leaving him in to hit, but decided against it.
“He’s still dealing with some wrist things,’’ Aaron Boone said.
Clint Frazier wasn’t in the lineup Tuesday, but Boone said the outfielder was fine after slamming into the left-field wall trying to make a catch in Monday’s loss to the Rangers. He entered the game as a defensive replacement for Aaron Judge in the ninth.
Third baseman Gio Urshela (groin) took batting practice outside at the Stadium as he attempts to come back from the injured list.
Aroldis Chapman was named AL Reliever of the Month for August. The lefty closer was dominant throughout the month, pitching 11 scoreless innings in 11 appearances. He gave up just three hits and five walks, while striking out 20. Chapman also picked up nine saves. He has converted 11 consecutive save opportunities since blowing two straight in July.
Chapman, 31, can opt out of the final two years of his contract following this season.
