There’s a storm going on right now in Japan, and it’s called Demon Slayer! The anime movie remains unstoppable at the domestic box-office.
According to Variety, the Japanese anime movie Demon Slayer Mugen Train breaks all box-office records. And now it has surpassed Titanic‘s lifetime collections in the Asian nation. With this, it has now become the second-biggest film of all time in Japan!
On Monday, distributor Aniplex officially revealed that theaters had witnessed 20.5 million admissions. And the movie has so far earned around $264 million domestically.
Demon Slayer beats Titanic in Japan
Based on Gotouge Koyoharu’s hit comic series, its anime adaptation is constantly going beyond previous projections. The ongoing blockbuster is a huge storm when it comes to ticket sales. It’s been just 45 days since it was released in cinema halls, but it has exceeded predictions in a short duration.
And now, going past Titanic is another big achievement for Demon Slayer. The 1997 iconic love saga made $251 million in Japan; the anime title is far ahead of its total collection. It seems like it will keep doing that till it actually becomes the number one film of all time in the country.
The movie’s plot revolves around a boy whose family gets killed, and his sister is kidnapped. And then he becomes the slayer of demons.
Currently, Spirited Away is still sitting at the top of the list when it comes to lifetime earnings.
Japan is witnessing huge success in theaters
The unexpected and immense success of Demon Slayer has shocked the rest of the world because many cinema halls are still closed. Amid a pandemic, witnessing such a performance feels like an exception. However, it was foreseen, given that audience in Japan anticipated it so much!
COVID-19 surely forced everything to come to a halt, but Japan’s people don’t feel that way. And theater owners are also taking proper measures and steps to make sure moviegoers remain safe. Coronavirus is spreading without a limit, yet it has enjoyed great box-office success with the anime blockbuster.
Speaking of Demon Slayerit will be soon released in North America also in early 2021. Its distributor Aniplex is owned by Sony Music Entertainment in Japan. The film is also streaming on platforms such as Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu. It seems unlikely that the movie’s arrival in the US will see a similar response to its domestic performance. But it will surely depend on the number of screens and interest of American people in animes.
