The Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) in Mumbai, India, is poised for construction as it has received the necessary commencement certificate (CC) for the 6.4-acre railway land rehabilitation section.
DRP CEO SVR Srinivas confirmed that the construction work on the land parcel in Matunga West of Central Mumbai will begin shortly.
Srinivas told the Hindustan Times: “We have received a CC for the railway land portion that is part of the project in the first phase. This has paved the way for rehabilitation permission and construction going forward.”
This urban renewal initiative was taken up by Dharavi Redevelopment Project Private Limited (DRPPL), a partnership between the Maharashtra state government and the Adani Group, a diversified organisation with a pan-India presence.
DRPPL now operates under the name Navbharat Mega Developers.
The project aims to redevelop one of the poorer areas of Mumbai.
In August 2024, Srinivas informed the news publication about the ongoing survey of tenements, with approximately 10,000 already assessed at that point.
He added that the total number of tenements would be determined once the survey was finished.
Srinivas had then said: “Dharavi is the slum rehabilitation project where both eligible and ineligible tenements will be given a house. We need around 550 acres of land to house the ineligible tenements, and we have applied for the same. We have not got any of the land yet.”
The Adani Group secured the project in November 2022, with a commitment to invest Rs50.69bn ($586m) in the venture, which is estimated to cost over Rs200bn.
The project area spans 600 acres, with 296 acres earmarked for redevelopment.
To execute this project, the Adani Group has engaged the expertise of three city planners, including Hafeez Contractor, an Indian architectural design consultancy.
The complex will feature four multistorey buildings, including three 36-storey towers with 821 flats equipped with modern amenities, a sports and recreation facility, and an administrative building.
The project’s goal is to rehabilitate approximately 0.7 million residents in one of Asia’s largest slum clusters, marking a milestone in Mumbai’s urban development.
Also, the DRP reached a milestone with the receipt of a CC from Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation for the construction of railway quarters on railway-owned land, reported the Times of India.
