Several movies were competing in a number of categories at the 95th Academy Awards, but did Elvis win any Oscars?
Sunday night (March 12, 2023) saw the best and brightest in Hollywood descend on Los Angeles’ Dolby Theatre for the 95th Academy Awards. Following the Golden Globes and BAFTAs, which took place earlier in the year, there was much debate about which films would win big at this year’s Oscars.
A number of films, including Baz Luhrmann’s musical biopic Elvis, were nominated in several categories. Some of Elvis’s biggest competitors included Everything Everywhere All At Once, the night’s big winner, as well as Top Gun: Maverick and The Banshees Of Inisherin.
But did Elvis win any Oscars on Sunday night? Let’s take a look at the biopic’s nominations as well as any wins.
Did Elvis win any Oscars?
No, unfortunately the movie biopic Elvis did not win any Oscars at the 95th Academy Awards. Elvis was one of several critically-acclaimed and commercially successful films which did not score at this year’s Oscars. Todd Field’s psychological drama Tár was nominated in six categories, but also did not win any. The Banshees Of Inisherin also did not take home any awards, despite being one of the most nominated films of the year.
This hasn’t gone down well with fans of the movie who are calling it a “snub.”
“Elvis (2022) and Austin Butler were snubbed at the Oscars,” one Twitter user commented. “All the hard work put into this incredible film deserved to win tonight.”
Elvis movie was nominated in eight categories
Despite not winning any Oscars, Elvis was one of the most nominated films of the night. It was nominated in the following categories:
- Best Picture – Baz Luhrmann, Catherine Martin, Gail Berman, Patrick McCormick, Schuyler Weiss
- Best Actor – Austin Butler
- Best Cinematography – Mandy Walker
- Best Production Design – Catherine Martin, Karen Murphy, Anthony Carlino
- Best Costume Design – Catherine Martin
- Best Makeup and Hairstyling – Mark Coulier, Jason Baird, Aldo Signoretti
- Best Film Editing – Matt Villa, Jonathan Redmond
- Best Sound – David Lee, Wayne Pashley, Andy Nelson, Michael Keller
Other awards ceremonies brought Elvis success
Although fans of Austin Butler and Baz Luhrmann were hoping that Elvis would bring them their first-ever Oscars, unfortunately, they did not take home a win.
However, Elvis has brought the duo, as well as the crew, success at other major awards ceremonies.
Austin Butler secured the BAFTA for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his performance as The King. The film also won BAFTAs for Best Makeup and Hair, Best Costume Design, and Best Casting. It was also nominated for Best Film, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Production Design, and Best Sound.
Butler also won the Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama at Golden Globes back in January. Elvis was also nominated for Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Director – Motion Picture.
