After meeting with Pope Francis, there has been speculation about whether the current President of the United States drinks alcohol.
Joe Biden made an interesting assertion while meeting with the Pope causing speculation: Has the US President ever consumed an alcoholic beverage?
Joe Biden meets the Pope at the Vatican
On Friday (October 29th) President Joe Biden met with Pope Francis at the Vatican in Rome where he gave the Pope a presidential command coin. During the meeting, Biden joked that if the Pope did not have the coin the next time they met he will “have to buy the drinks.”
But then things got interesting as the President made an extremely bold assertion. He said: “I’m the only Irishman you’ve ever met who’s never had a drink” to which the Pope responded through his translator that Irish folk “love whiskey.”
Does Joe Biden drink alcohol?
According to Marie Claire, the US president does not drink alcohol and has never consumed an alcoholic beverage.
In 2008, Biden explained his reasons for not drinking: “There are enough alcoholics in my family.” Although Joe Snr. was not an alcoholic he did enjoy drinking. While his mother’s side of the family (Finnegans) and their neighbourhood suffered more severe effects.
Tom Bell who was one of President Biden’s childhood friends from Scranton said: “Every family had it. But the Finnegans had more than their share.” Joe Biden, therefore, witnessed the impact of alcoholism while he was growing up with his uncle being a heavy drinker and his brother Frankie who is now a recovering alcoholic.
Does former US President Donald Trump drink alcohol?
Similarly to his political opponent, Donald Trump also practices teetotalism and claims that he has never consumed an alcoholic beverage in his lifetime.
Trump biographer Timothy L. O’Brien said: “He’s never been someone who enjoys going to a party and socialising. His ideal night is sitting in front of a TV watching a sports event with a cheeseburger. That’s his bottle of wine.”
Interestingly, his reasons for not consuming alcohol are extremely similar to those of Biden. Trump also grew up in a family plagued with alcoholism with his brother Freddy passing away at just 43-years-old from alcohol addiction.
However, Trump has previously admitted that he will consume alcohol on one particular occasion which is when he attends church. In 2015, he said: “When we go in church… I drink the little wine, which is about the only wine I drink.”
