Cancel Netflix Campaign has sparked major debate after Elon Musk urged people to end their subscriptions. The question now being asked is who is winning, Elon Musk or Netflix? The campaign has spread across social media, impacted Netflix shares, and created discussions about content, children’s health, and investor reactions.

Cancel Netflix Campaign: Who is winning, Elon Musk or Netflix?

Cancel Netflix Campaign has gained attention after Elon Musk called on his followers to end their subscriptions to the streaming platform. His appeal came with the claim that Netflix is allegedly pushing harmful content that affects children. This campaign has created a wider debate in the entertainment and financial markets, raising the question: who is winning, Elon Musk or Netflix?

What is the Cancel Netflix Campaign?

Cancel Netflix Campaign began when Elon Musk posted on his social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, urging subscribers to cancel their Netflix accounts. He said the decision should be made for the health of children.

Musk’s post followed claims from the account “Libs of TikTok,” which alleged that Netflix was “pushing pro-transgender content on children.” His statement quickly went viral, gaining over 53 million views and more than 391,000 likes. Many users joined Musk’s call to cancel Netflix subscriptions, creating a trend on social media.

Elon Musk Confirms Netflix Cancellation Over Controversial Content

An X (formerly Twitter) user said they had cancelled their Netflix subscription, writing that the platform “employs someone who celebrated the murder of Charlie Kirk and makes content that pushes pro-trans content on my kids. You will never get a dime of my money.” Elon Musk replied “same,” confirming that he also cancelled his subscription.

Elon Musk Responds to Hiring of Hamish Steele

Musk’s move follows the hiring of Hamish Steele, a director who allegedly mocked the killing of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk. Reports indicate that Steele, creator of the animated series Dead End: Paranormal Park, referred to Kirk as a “nazi” and made comments about his assassination, which occurred at a college event at Utah University on September 10. Kirk was an ally of former President Donald Trump.

Hamish Steele’s Online Posts Draw Backlash

In online posts, Steele said, “Your sympathy for any of the families being slaughtered by your own weapons but a random Nazi gets shot and it’s a public statement,” in response to UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s comments on the killing. Musk responded to these posts, writing, “This is not ok,” and later called Steele a “groomer.”

Animated Work Criticized for Content

Additionally, Steele’s animated work has been criticized for promoting “pro-trans content.” This incident adds to Netflix’s recent controversies, following similar boycotts in September.

Why did Elon Musk target Netflix?

Elon Musk expanded on his concerns by reposting a video from conservative commentator Benny Johnson. The video claimed Netflix was packaging explicit topics as entertainment for children. Musk stated that he agreed with this view and stressed that it was not a partisan political issue but a matter of protecting children from what he described as inappropriate content.

Musk also supported comments from other users on X who said the campaign represented a broader effort to take a stand against such material. He confirmed that he too had cancelled his Netflix membership, adding weight to the campaign.

Netflix share price reaction

The Cancel Netflix Campaign also had a visible impact on financial markets. Data from CompanyMarketCap showed that Netflix lost 1.05% in market capitalisation, equal to $5.33 billion, bringing its total valuation to $507.25 billion. Investors responded with a selling spree amid the controversy.

At 11:17 a.m. (EDT), MarketWatch data showed Netflix shares were trading at $1,146.87, down 2.13% compared to $1,170.90. In pre-market trading on Nasdaq, the stock also dropped nearly 1%.

Netflix stock performance over time

Despite the recent dip linked to the Cancel Netflix Campaign, Netflix shares have performed strongly in the past. Over the last five years, the stock has returned more than 128% to investors. In the past year alone, it has gained over 61%.

So far in 2025, Netflix shares are up more than 30% on a year-to-date basis. However, recent weeks have seen a decline, with the stock down 4.60% in the last month and 3.96% in the last five trading sessions.

The stock’s 52-week high stands at $1,341.15, while its low is $677.88. As of October 2, 2025, the company’s market capitalisation is $497.55 billion.

Who is winning: Elon Musk or Netflix?

The Cancel Netflix Campaign highlights a clash between cultural influence and financial performance. Musk’s call has generated widespread attention, with millions engaging in the discussion. Netflix, however, continues to show strong long-term growth, even as it faces short-term market pressure.

The outcome of who is winning—Elon Musk or Netflix—depends on whether the campaign translates into lasting subscription losses or remains a temporary controversy. For now, Netflix’s financial track record shows resilience, but Musk’s influence has shifted the conversation across social platforms and investor circles.
