EMP has wond a new development contract to supply high voltage fans for use in cooling a fuel cell truck.
The customer, an unnamed “global manufacturer of battery electric and fuel cell commercial vehicles”, will use the fan in the cooling systems of a new flagship fuel cell truck.
The production contract is worth US$27m over five years.
EMP already supplies “many” electric low voltage fans for both on and off highway applications but this will be the first of its products to use a high voltage electrical supply. Validation of the product will be completed in 2022 with production launching in 2023.
The motor and controller will deliver power of up to 25KW using an 800V supply. It will be a modular design and will have potential to be used within the numerous cooling systems that EMP already supplies.
The electric fan enables the use of high voltage supply, eliminating the need for a low voltage DC converter, its air cooled design eliminates need for additional cooling systems, traditional and CAN based HVIL are available, a long service life is aided by the DC brushless design giving over 50,000 hours, diagnostics and utilising sensors are integrated and full reversibility allows radiator cleaning and enhances the total system lifetime.
