Sharkboy and Lavagirl are back but original star Taylor Lautner is not.
Netflix debuted the first official pictures from the upcoming standalone sequel to 2005’s The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl on Twitter on Wednesday.
The new flick, titled We Can Be Heroes, sees Lavagirl and Sharkboy return as parents to a young daughter (played by Bird Box star Vivien Lyra Blair.
Actress Taylor Dooley has reprised her role as Lavagirl but fans couldn’t help but notice Taylor’s role of Sharkboy is now played by Spy Kids star J. J. Dashnaw.
Fans instantly shared their shock and dismay at the swap on Twitter as one wrote: ‘WHO’S THAT SHARKBOY IMPOSTER WHERE IS TAYLOR LAUTNER.’
Another tweeted: ‘Wait so Taylor Lautner is not back as Sharkboy? And that’s why they gave a helmet to the new actor.’
One devastated fan added: ‘Now what was taylor Lautner doing that was so important he couldn’t help us relive our childhoods for a second.’
While another commented: ‘I’m sorry but Taylor Lautner will always be THE sharkboy and Netflix should’ve done everything possible to get him out of the cave where he’s hiding. I want my full 2005 nostalgia experience!’

Taylor famously went on to star as Jacob Black in the Twilight saga, but the star will always be loved for his work in the corny 3-D kids film by Robert Rodriguez.
Robert and Stacey are the only names from the original that appear to be connected to this Netflix sequel.
However, new faces such as Priyanka Chopra, Christopher McDonald, and Christian Slater are listed on the film’s IMDb which should be fun.
We Can Be Heroes lands on Netflix on New Year’s Day.
