Beloved artist and writer Eve Babitz has sadly died aged 78, her biographer has confirmed.
Amid the sad news of Babitz’s passing, fans are taking a look back on the life of the ‘Hollywood muse’, specifically remembering the iconic chess photograph with Marcel Duchamp.

Artist and writer passes away aged 78
Lili Anolik, Eve Babitz’s biographer, confirmed that the 78-year-old had passed away on Friday (December 17th) afternoon.
The writer died at a Los Angeles hospital following complications from Huntington’s disease, reports say.
Eve was the daughter of a violinist and an artist, and the goddaughter of Russian composer Igor Stravinsky.
Stamped as a Hollywood icon, Babitz published numerous books throughout her lifetime including ‘Eve’s Hollywood’ and ‘Slow Days, Fast Company’, detailing her LA life.

Fans recall iconic Eve Babitz chess photograph
At just 20-years-old as a student at Los Angeles Community College, Eve Babitz served as the subject of Julian Wasser’s infamous chess photograph.
The 1963 image sees a naked Babitz playing chess with fellow artist Marcel Duchamp.
As per Artsy.net, the photograph captured ‘the meeting of two brilliant minds’ and went down in history as one of the many things that Eve Babitz would be remembered for.
The Guardian reports that Babitz once recalled the famous image: “Anything seemed possible – for art, that night. Especially after all that red wine.”
One person tweeted: “rip eve babitz remembering when she played marcel duchamp in chess while naked.”
Another wrote: “I’d rather be playing chess nude with Duchamp. RIP Eve Babitz, icon of my youth and prime influence on my writing.”
Somebody else remembered: “I met Eve Babitz in Berkeley some years ago. She signed her book for me that contained this photo. She also answered my question saying Duchamp beat her in the chess games they played. I certainly got the sense she was an L.A. person, totally enamored of celebrity.”
