Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy is on trial for allegedly receiving millions of euros in illegal campaign financing from Libya’s late leader, Moammar Gadhafi, for his 2007 presidential bid. Sarkozy faces charges including corruption, embezzlement, illegal campaign financing, and criminal conspiracy with a view to committing a crime. He has denied all the allegations. The trial, which will span three months, stems from a decade-long investigation involving wiretaps and international probes. Investigators claim Sarkozy brokered a pact with Gadhafi in 2005 to provide international support for Libya in return for millions of euros in campaign funds. However, Sarkozy’s lawyer dismissed the case as baseless, citing a lack of evidence. If convicted, Sarkozy faces up to 10 years in prison. This case adds to his legal troubles, including a conviction for corruption upheld last year and ongoing investigations into campaign spending violations.
