Synopsis: An Arctic Airmass from Canada moved into South Texas Sunday morning taking Saturday’s 86-degree temperature down to 33 degrees before warming back up to 48 degrees on Sunday afternoon. High pressure (will be centered over the viewing area around 7 am) will keep the area dry, with light winds and clear skies on Sunday night and Monday morning as the overnight cool down will result in a Freeze Warning set in place from Midnight Monday until 9 am Monday morning. The warning will be in place for most of the viewing area. The further west the ridge is, then this will result in more wind over the eastern portion of the viewing area. Coastal locations might stay below freezing for a couple of hours without the caveat of a warning (freeze). Warm air returning to South Texas will allow for a gradual warming trend Monday afternoon through Tuesday.
In the long term for the extended period, days 3 to 7, Tuesday through Sunday, airflow from the Gulf (south) will return on Tuesday, as the high-pressure system (at the surface) shifts east across the country.
This flow will increase the moisture, dewpoint temperatures and temperatures through the work week. Storm energy at the 500 mb/18,000 feet level will rotate through the region Tuesday into Wednesday. The lack of lift combined with the lack of moisture will keep rain chances between 10-20 percent.
By the middle of the week more storm energy will push through the Plains while sending another cold front towards the Crossroads.
This cold front should move through the South Texas late Wednesday afternoon and then head offshore during the evening hours. This cold front will linger along the coast during the day on Thursday before another system of high-pressure pushes the rest of the cold front through the area on Thursday night.
Low moisture levels once again should keep South Texas on the dry side while another flow of cold air moves into the region that could bring freezing temperatures across the Coastal Plains on Friday morning.
A warmup begins on Friday and will persist through the weekend as a trough moves in from the coast. This warmer (moist) air could bring rain chances (10-20 percent). Rain chances increase and move further inland as moisture levels increase in South Texas while out in front of the next cold front which looks to move through the area early next week.
