Americans love a good pickup truck. And for a good reason – pickup trucks can be very useful. Now that the electric car revolution has started, more and more companies are introducing electric pickup trucks. General Motors just announced that its Chevrolet Silverado is going to have an electric version, manufactured in the same facility as the Hummer EV.
Chevrolet Silverado is a big pickup truck made since 1998. It has a huge following in the US and is regarded as a trong workhorse and a reliable travel companion. Typically it has a large petrol or diesel engine and that is just not going to cut it in the age of an electric car. Thankfully, General Motors is already making an electric Hummer, which boasts some serious off-roading credentials. Silverado EV will definitely be taking advantage of those.
Silverado EV is going to be made on the same platform, called Ultium. These electric cars will be made at Factory ZERO – a plant in Detroit and Hamtramck, Michigan, dedicated to GM’s EV production. It is not the first time Silverado and Hummer share common genes. Hummer H2 was actually based on Silverado’s platform, which caused significant criticism from purists, who wanted Hummer to retain its military roots and structure.
General Motors President Mark Reuss said: “The GMC HUMMER EV SUV joins its stablemate in the realm of true supertrucks, and Chevrolet will take everything Chevy’s loyal truck buyers love about Silverado — and more — and put it into an electric pickup that will delight retail and commercial customers alike”.
Interestingly, Silverado EV is not going to be that closely related to the ICE-powered Silverado. It will be a new car from the ground up, designed to be a battery-electric vehicle from the very beginning. So far we don’t know that many details, but Reuss said that the truck will have innovations that are difficult to imagine. Also, it will have a range of over 400 miles (643 km). This falls in line with some other electric pickup trucks, but that is also just an estimation. On the other hand, GM says that it is developing an entire model range of electric supertrucks – those are some serious plants.
GM is making a serious push for electrification. Corporation is planning to deliver more than 1 million electric vehicles globally by 2025. It also wants to become the EV leader in North America – a continent with Tesla and Rivian making their own electric pickup trucks.
Tesla is making a Cybertruck, Rivian is creating R1T and Ford is going to electrify its legendary F150. This is happening in the US – a country where pickup trucks are outselling all other cars. We will have to wait and see how Silverado EV will look like and what it will do in terms of sales.
