A 74-year-old man from Geraldton who is part of an informal movement of “sovereign citizens” has been charged for allegedly inciting others to arrest government ministers, including Premier Mark McGowan.

Key points:

  • The Geraldton man allegedly incited others to arrest government ministers in videos posted to social media
  • Police allege documents claiming to be arrest warrants were handed into police stations
  • The accused has been granted bail and will appear in court in March

State Security Investigation Group officers travelled from Perth to Geraldton yesterday to arrest Wayne Kenneth Glew at his property in Glenfield, in Geraldton’s north.

He has been charged with inciting another to commit an indictable offence.

It is alleged Mr Glew posted a series of videos on social media where he used threatening language and incited others to arrest government ministers and public officials after documents claiming to be arrest warrants were handed in at Perth Police Station in January.

He was granted bail and will face the Geraldton Magistrates Court in March.

The former police officer had his property seized in 2018 after he refused to pay $300,000 in council rates and legal costs because he believed local governments were unconstitutional.

During the 2019 federal election Mr Glew, who was declared a “vexatious litigant” by the WA Supreme Court, ran for the Senate under the Great Australian Party.

Nearly 20,000 people follow Mr Glew on social media.

Unlawful documents

In a separate matter, two people from Bakers Hill, 73 kilometres east of Perth in the Wheatbelt region, have each been charged with three counts of falsely representing themselves to be Commonwealth public officials after they served arrest warrants on government ministers electronically.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Todd White, the officer in charge of the State Security Investigation Group, said the documents that were handed to the Perth Police Station and other police stations were not lawful.

“Any person impersonating either a Commonwealth or state public official, or attempting to serve or enforce these types of documents, may commit an offence and could be subject to a police investigation,” he said.

The 31-year-old woman and the 51-year-old man were both granted bail and will appear in the Perth Magistrates Court later this month.
