German skater Nicole Schott chooses Schindler’s List theme, social media reacts

SOCIAL media called out a German figure skater for choosing to perform to the theme from Schindler’s List – a movie about the Holocaust – during the Winter Olympics.

Nicole Schott performed to the Schindler’s List score during her free skate performance on Thursday night.

“Nicole Schott is a German woman skating to Schindler’s List. that feels real f***ed up #Olympics,” wrote one commenter.

“NO ONE SHOULD BE SKATING TO SCHINDLER’S LIST!!!!!!!” added USA Today columnist Nancy Armour.

Steven Spielberg’s 1993 movie was about Oskar Schindler, a German factory owner who saved the lives of Jewish refugees during the Holocaust by employing them at his factories. John Williams wrote the score.

Just tuned into Olympic figure skating and the German figure skater is skating to the theme song from … Schindler’s List. No joke. Call me crazy but that doesn’t seem right.

Not everyone took issue with the choice.

Might it not be an homage to the delicate irony of the rise of fascism in the U.K. and U.S. while Germany stands the leader of the free world? Might it not be a sombre humor, a dance to represent Germany as it is, a nation of Oskar Schindlers, instead of what it was? Just asking.

Schindler was a German industrialist and a member of the Nazi Party who saved 1200 Jews during the Holocaust by employing them in his factories. So, no, you’re not crazy, just wholly uneducated.
