Actor Adil Hussain recently expressed regret over his involvement in the controversial film Kabir Singh. The movie, directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga and starring Shahid Kapoor, stirred significant debate due to its portrayal of misogyny and toxic masculinity.
In a candid conversation on the YouTube channel AP Podcast, Hussain confessed that Kabir Singh stands out as the sole project in his esteemed career that he wishes he hadn’t been a part of. He disclosed that he accepted the role without delving into the script beforehand, a departure from his usual practice. “That’s the only film in my life that I have done without reading the script, without seeing the movie which it is based on,” Hussain admitted.
‘I Regret It Till Today’, Says Adil Hussain On Doing Kabir Singh
Upon watching the film post-release, Hussain found himself deeply troubled by its content and left the theatre within 20 minutes. He stated, “I regret it till today. The only movie I have regretted doing is that film… Kabir Singh.” He labelled the film as “misogynist” and expressed how it left him feeling diminished as a human being.
While acknowledging Vanga’s creative freedom, Hussain emphasized his disagreement with the film’s message. “I think a film like this, it celebrates something which is not beneficial for society. It legitimizes male misogyny. It legitimizes violence against anybody for that matter, doesn’t have to be a woman. And it celebrates it, it glorifies it and it should not be glorified,” he asserted.
Sandeep Reddy Vanga Sent Arjun Reddy Script
Hussain also shed light on the circumstances surrounding his involvement in the project. He revealed that due to time constraints, he didn’t have the opportunity to read the complete script. Instead, he was sent the script for “Arjun Reddy,” the Telugu original of “Kabir Singh.” Despite his reservations, his manager’s attempts to negotiate a higher fee proved futile, leading Hussain to reluctantly proceed with the role.
Reflecting on his experience, Hussain expressed profound embarrassment upon witnessing the film’s portrayal on the big screen. “You have no idea how embarrassed I felt,” he confessed.
Additionally, Hussain shared concerns about the impact of the film on his personal life, particularly if his wife were to watch it. In Kabir Singh, he portrayed the character of a professor and college dean.
