CapChar, a UK provider of on-farm biochar solutions, has launched a public consultation on its new Biochar Carbon Code. Stakeholders are invited to contribute feedback to refine a code that the group suggests “promises to set a new benchmark for biochar carbon removal”.
Unlike existing standards/codes, says CapChar, the Biochar Carbon Code is built upon a comprehensive, end-to-end solution. CapChar is offering the code itself and also providing cutting-edge pyrolysis technology and a dMRV (digital Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification) software platform, ensuring a seamless integration across the entire biochar supply chain.
The group itemises key differentiators of the Biochar Carbon Code:
- Integrated total solution: CapChar delivers both the necessary technology and dMRV software, whereas most other codes focus on only one aspect of the supply chain.
- 80% permanence: Underpinned by the latest scientific research, the code reflects a conservative and robust assessment from peer-reviewed methodologies.
- UK-focused: This code is tailored specifically to the UK, fostering a home-grown carbon economy.
- Heterogeneous feedstock: The code accommodates a wide variety of feedstocks, maximising its usability for diverse agricultural needs.
- Rigorous testing: A stringent monthly elemental analysis sampling and testing regime, for a more robust percentage organic carbon average, ensure a high-quality standard.
CapChar’s Co-founder, Adam Samuel, said: “By addressing every stage of the biochar process, we are providing farmers with an accessible, reliable path to carbon sequestration and soil health regeneration. The code forms part of our wider aim to be the turnkey biochar solution of choice for farmers and other stakeholders across the UK.”
CapChar says it has already made significant strides in advancing UK biochar carbon removal efforts. Featured on BBC Panorama’s Can Scientists Save the Planet at the end of last year, CapChar’s on-farm biochar technology, says the group, “drastically reduces farming’s carbon footprint while regenerating soil health, to help safeguard the future of UK food security”.
The company has commissioned sites in North Wales and Cornwall and carbon credits have been pre-sold to a UK design firm.
The consultation will remain open for one month. Details can be found at https://capchar.com/biochar-carbon-code/.
