A loyal dog that stayed by its injured friend’s side overnight has followed the volunteers to the vet and refused to let go at the operating table.
The stray mongrel was first spotted taking care of its pal who got ran over by a car on a main road in the city centre of Iguatu, Ceara in Brazil last Sunday.
The story of the inseparable pair made worldwide headlines after the video showing the pooch trying to revive the injured canine by the roadside went viral.
A local non-governmental organisation was alerted and sent volunteers to rescue and take the dog to a vet.
Footage taken inside the operating theatre, the caring dog of the same breed is seen standing on hind legs while looking over its unconscious pal lying on the table.
While the vet is examining the injured dog’s situation, the pooch refuses to leave the area and pokes its head close to the vet.
Nurse Marina Assuncao, who rescued the injured dog, has revealed the dog is now on the mend, saying it can now stand and walk, albeit with difficulty.
She said: “We don’t think there’s a problem with its spine. It has a neurological problem. It doesn’t look at us when we speak.”
The poor fur baby is currently receiving medication and it will undergo tests that will hopefully result in a diagnosis.
Animal welfare organisation Adota Iguatu, has named the dogs Caju (Cashew) and Castanha (Chestnut) and has revealed they will be put up for adoption together once the injured pooch is fully recovered.
Marina said that several people, including a well-known comedian, have already expressed interest in adopting the two pooches.
The injured dog’s treatment is being funded by donations from members of the public, which rapidly increased following the story hitting the press.
It is still unclear if the dogs are siblings or just good pals.
However, the NGO stated that they will not be separated.
