With food options in a Tokyo state of emergency at an all-time low, Morocco’s Youness Baalla got creative on Tuesday as he tried to take a chunk out of Kiwi heavyweight boxer David Nyika.
Nyika was happy to have booked his place in the quarter-finals inside the Kokugikan Arena, but was left feeling even more grateful for his frustrated opponent’s mouthguard.
“He didn’t get a full mouthful,” Nyika told TVNZ post-fight. “Luckily he had his mouthguard in, and I was a bit sweaty.
“But come on, man this is the Olympics, get your s*** together.”
An exasperated Baalla, who couldn’t get into the fight, resorted to the Mike Tyson-esque act in the third and final round, knowing full well he was behind on every scorecard.
Appearing to bite down on the ear and cheek on Nyika, Baalla escaped punishment from the referee despite the New Zealand fighter protesting immediately.
Nyika sealed the unanimous decision victory (5-0) regardless, and will next face Belarus’ Uladzislau Smiahlikau.
