How do I find and select a real estate agent?

I honestly have no idea of where to begin.

I moved to Georgia (US), currently renting and do not know anybody here. I think I would like to buy here in the next few months. I’ve gone to realtor.com and tried to sort through agent profiles, but I honestly don’t know what I’m looking for/how to choose somebody. I’ve seen references to a “Buyers Agent” here & there–what does this mean? That’s what I would want, yes?
