Thick black smoke can be seen billowing into the air as a huge fire has engulfed Swansea University’s Bay Campus.

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service have sent five appliances to the scene at 6.08pm, including a water bowser and and aerial appliance.

In a tweet the university said the blaze started in the engineering department and that they were working with fire officers. It is not thought anyone was in the building at the time, according to the BBC.

The £450 million campus opened in 2015 near the border between Neath Port Talbot and Swansea council areas and is home to around 5,000 students and 1,000 staff.

Nearby Fabian Way is partially blocked due to the fire and drivers are asked to approach the area carefully as firefighters try to contain the inferno.
