The UFC middleweight division has been in sharp focus in recent weeks. Kevin Holland and Marvin Vettori headlined UFC Vegas 23, and the next UFC event, UFC Fight Night: Whittaker vs. Gastelum, is another event where two top middleweights are fighting for a shot at the champion.
The champion, Israel Adesanya, himself fought in the main event of UFC 259 and lost against Jan Blachowicz. Therefore, he is there for the taking, and Marvin Vettori has called him out. ‘The Italian Dream’ dominantly beat Holland in their match and made a statement of contention.
In an interview with Brett Okamoto from ESPN MMA, Vettori talked about this fight and showed some regrets. “I wanted to break him. I wanted to stop him,” he said.
However, he added that it was a dominant performance nevertheless, as the judges scored the fight 50-44 in his favor.
Vettori also added that he expects perfection from himself and that he is his own biggest critic. His fight wasn’t perfect, but it was still a dominant performance.
“I’m just going to improve, improve, improve, and I can’t wait to have my shot and my revenge on Adesanya,” he said.
Vettori had fought ‘The Last Stylebender’ before the latter became the champion, but lost that fight via a decision.
Marvin Vettori says that he always knew that he would gain his title shot again
Okamoto asked him what mattered to him more, revenge or the title shot, and ‘The Italian Dream’ revealed that both things motivated him.
“For some reason, I always knew that even though he was saying that it’s never gonna happen, he’s never gonna gain his title shot again. I knew for some reason that fight was going to happen. I never had a doubt about it,” he said.
Vettori is in contention for a title shot as he was ranked number six in the official UFC middleweight rankings before the Holland fight. He has shown significant improvements in his fighting style and can pose a good challenge for Adesanya.
Even if he doesn’t get a title shot straight away, he’s surely closer to a number one contender’s fight, and that was as close as he has gotten recently.
Do you think Marvin Vettori can dominate Israel Adesanya as Jan Blachowicz did?
