ECONOMYNEXT – India has provided relief suppliers to Sri Lanka from the aircraft carriers Vikrant and an escort vessel which is currently in the island, the Indian embassy said as Cyclone Ditwah killed 69 in the island and hit over 200,000 persons.
More that 18,000 families were displaced by Friday evening and flood waters were continuing to rise in coastal areas downriver in Colombo and Gampaha districts were being evacuated, while the hardest hit were in the hill country and the East which are directly lashed by rains and high winds.
“India has so far provided 4.5 tons of dry rations and 2 tons of fresh rations, consisting of staple foods, packaged and ready-to-eat items, dairy and bakery products, beverages, and other nutritional essentials to meet urgent household needs,” the Indian embassy said in a statement.
“In addition, other essential survival items were also handed over. These supplies were provided from the Indian Naval Ships INS Vikrant and INS Udayagiri, which are currently in Sri Lanka.”
The aircraft carrier Vikrant carries over 1,800 in crew and carries supplies to feed them for over a month.
It has on board kitchens and a bakery.
“In this challenging moment, India stands in solidarity with the people of Sri Lanka,” the Indian embassy said.
“Guided by its steadfast commitment to the “Neighbourhood First” policy, India remains fully committed to supporting Sri Lanka during this difficult time.
“Further assistance will continue to be coordinated in consultation with the authorities of the Government of Sri Lanka as the situation evolves.” (Colombo/Nov30/2025)
